Radiation-induced Oxidation of Polymers
نویسنده
چکیده
A polymer is a macromolecule formed by the combination of simple molecules, monomers, of low molecular weight. A polymer molecule usually has at least 2000 atoms linked by covalent bonds. In general, polymers can be divided into inorganic and organic, and also into naturally occurring and synthetically produced. Polymers may contain additives such as dyes, fi llers, antioxidants, fl ame retardant materials and other components needed to carry out their use in many application areas. The properties of polymers largely depend on both their microstructure and macrostructure. Ionizing radiation excites active species, like radicals. In the radiation processing of polymers, usually two kinds of radiation are used: (i) high energy electrons from accelerators, which give continuous and homogeneous radiation, but have limited penetration depth, and are a source of high doses of radiation per unit of time, and (ii) gamma rays from radionuclides of cobalt-60 and cesium-137, which more deeply penetrate materials and give relatively small doses of radiation per unit of time.

Background and Objectives: Gamma irradiation has been shown as an effective technology to decrease or eliminate microbial contamination in raw and cooked meat products. However, irradiation-induced physicochemical changes are important to accept the technology by meat industries and consumers. The objective of this study was to assess effects of gamma irradiation (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 kGy) on nitri...

Ageing and stabilization polymers is a major part of materials science. Aging of polymers defined as a set of chemical and physical transformations, leads to the loss of their set the desired properties. The main role in these transformations belong to chemical processes of degradation and crosslinking of macromolecules. Processes decomposition and structuring polymer conjugates include radical...
متن کاملOxidative damage to 5-methylcytosine in DNA.
Exposure of pyrimidines of DNA to ionizing radiation under aerobic conditions or oxidizing agents results in attack on the 5,6 double bond of the pyrimidine ring or on the exocyclic 5-methyl group. The primary product of oxidation of the 5,6 double bond of thymine is thymine glycol, while oxidation of the 5-methyl group yields 5-hydroxymethyluracil. Oxidation of the 5,6 double bond of cytosine ...

In nanoimprint lithography, a surface oxidation process is needed to produce an effective poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating that can be used as an anti-adhesive surface of template molds. However, the conventional photooxidation technique or acidic oxidative treatment cannot be easily applied to polymer molds with nanostructures since surface etching by UV radiation or strong acids significantly d...
